What is the Summer Reading Adventure?

This summer you will participate in our Summer Reading Adventure!  Each week you will choose a book to read and complete a fun learning activity for your book.  There are a total of 6 activities that you will complete. You may choose the books you want to read or you may choose them from the suggested reading list below. You will use this website to access information and submit your assignments.

Where will the Adventure Take You (Our Goal)?

The goal of our Summer Reading Adventure is to continue the mission of our school media center, which is to foster a love of reading and learning!  It’s important to keep your brain active even during the summer so that you are ready for your 2nd grade year and your last year at S.C. Primary School!

Objectives: The following objectives are based on the Reading and Literacy Standards for 2nd grade.

  • The students will be able to describe the overall structure of a story including describing how the beginning introduces the story, the middle provides major events and challenges, and the ending concludes the action.

  • The students will be able to acknowledge differences in the points of view of characters, including by speaking in a different voice for each character when reading dialogue aloud.

  • The students will be able to use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.

  • The students will be able to ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

  • The students will be able to identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain, or describe.

  • The students will be able to read on-level text with purpose and understanding.

  • The students will be able to read on-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings.

What Supplies Will You Need for Your Adventure?

You will need to have access to books and a computer with internet.  You can use books that you have at home, visit the public library or our school's Little Library. You may also use a computer from home or visit the public library for computer and internet access.  If you are unable to access these resources, a hard copy of the syllabus and assignments will be provided. Students may complete assignments on paper and a folder will be provided to keep up with their work to turn in at the beginning of the year.

Below is a link to a suggested reading list.  The books on the suggested list are the 2016-2017 Georgia Children’s Book Award Nominees.  Please feel free to choose your own books or you may choose them from the list below. There is also a tab at the top of the page for the suggested reading list and I have provided several websites where you can access read alouds online.

When Will Your Adventure Take Place?

All activities/assignments with descriptions are available under the "Weekly Activites" tab at the top of the page. You will share/submit assignments to me via Google Docs. Please use your school assigned Google account. You will share with my account: june2397@gmail.com.  I will monitor progress each week and check off on assignments and give feedback. Throughout the course the students will receive merits or move up levels as they complete their activities so that they can self-monitor their progress throughout and work towards the ultimate goal of the celebration.  The students may monitor their levels by clicking the link under the weekly activities tab.

* You are encouraged to read books on ALL sorts of topics that interest you!  If you go somewhere over the summer, remember to take a book with you!  We would also love to see pictures of you reading this summer, so share those with us if you can!

*We will hold a celebration at the beginning of

the school year for those students who complete

the Summer Reading Adventure!

Assessment: A description and rubric for each assignment/activity are provided on the "Weekly Activities" page.  Grading of assignments will be based on understanding of the topic/objective for each week and participation.  I will go in each week to check the progress of the students and provide feedback.

Modifications: Students with need for modifications are encouraged to contact me for a confidential discussion of their individual needs for academic accommodation. It is the policy of the S.C. Primary School to provide individualized accommodations to students with documented disabilities that may affect their ability to fully participate in activities or to meet requirements.
